Library News

11-21-03 - Over the past several weeks, the 7th grade classes have been discussing the Newbery Medal winning books both in the library and in their English classes. Each student was asked to select a Newbery book of his/her choice and to write about it in a book report. Then the 7th graders were treated to a special presentation given by Amy Sears, member of the 2003 Newbery Award Committee. Ms. Sears explained the background of this prestigious award that is presented annually from the American Library Association to honor the year’s best children’s book. Then she described the yearlong process she undertook, reading hundreds and hundreds of newly published books, meeting with other committee member and finally selecting THE WINNER. After her presentation, the students asked Ms. Sears many thoughtful questions that led to a lively discussion. Through their reading and the presentation, the students have gained a personal understanding of the process and significance of the Newbery Award.
