The Mesivta
The Mesivta of North Jersey's program emphasizes a love of and
commitment to study. Students are taught in a nurturing, Torah
environment to be analytical and creative thinkers in all areas of
wisdom and to be actively involved in community chessed activities.
The Mesivta currently encompasses grades 9-12.
Motto of the Mesivta
Toras Chayyim VeAhavas Chessed.
The Torah of Life and the Love of Kindness. These words, expressed in
the daily tefillah and chosen as the motto of the mesivta,
embody the basis of our hashkafah.
Torah of Life. Torah is the
center of our entire existence. As human beings, we need to understand
the world around us and appreciate all of its wisdom. As Jews, our
lives are defined not only by Torah learning, but by a dedication to
Torah values and ideals. Limud HaTorah is therefore not merely
another subject area, or even the primary subject area; rather, it is
the prism through which all categories of knowledge and action — indeed,
all aspects of life — are developed.
Love of Kindness. Without
the foundation of excellence in middos, one's learning lacks
meaning. The hallmark of the Jew has always been a passionate
commitment to looking beyond one's self. Consideration of the home, the
community, and the world at large must be integrally linked with one's
study. Chessed is an attribute not only to be taught, but also
to be felt.
In all areas, students are exposed to more than just a
classroom experience; they are taught a way of life.
Goals of the Mesivta
Bnei Torah, Academic Scholars, Devoted Members of the
Community. The overriding goal of our
mesivta is to develop bnei Torah and yirei shomayim
who clearly identify themselves as such, as they pursue outstanding
achievement in all academic disciplines. Our students are taught that
the character of the true ben Torah is measured not only by his
conduct in the beis medrash, but also by his approach to all
areas of study, his manner of speech, his interaction with others, and
his general deportment.
Excellence in chinukh entails the teaching of the
mind and the engagement of the heart. Students are imbued with a
passionate love of learning when they are able to master not only the
breadth of knowledge, but also the wisdom of a derekh /
methodology, which enables them to think and learn on their own. Our
talmidim are guided toward these goals through a warm and nurturing
rebbe-talmid relationship.
Excellence in general education within the framework of a
yeshiva requires a very similar approach, as all areas of
knowledge represent the majestic beauty and grandeur of the chokhmas
haBorei. Students are guided in the development of intellectual
curiosity and integrity, and are educated in the rigors of research,
analysis, and critical and creative thought and expression by caring and
devoted teachers.
A complete yeshiva education also includes the
preparation of young Jewish adults for their future lives as
contributing members of society. Students are trained to identify with
the destiny of their fellow Jews and to understand their
responsibilities to all of humanity. Love of Eretz Yisrael and
commitment to ethical integrity are vital components of this training.
